Restoration of a Deteriorated Oil Painting
Consolidating a weakened oil paint layer, applying protective varnish, and arranging individual transport in Catalonia.
This oil painting had a weakened paint layer that had lost some of its flexibility. The oil binder had deteriorated, and the surface needed consolidation to stabilize fragile areas. The painting also had no varnish protection; after treatment, I applied a suitable protective varnish layer.

Why oil paint can become brittle
Oil paint does not dry simply because its liquid evaporates: the oil changes through oxidation and polymerization. Over time, chemical aging of the binder can make the paint film less flexible and more brittle. If the canvas moves or environmental conditions fluctuate, a film that has become rigid may crack, lift, or lose cohesion.
In this painting, the oil binder had deteriorated and the paint layer had lost some of its flexibility. Stabilizing it was necessary to reduce the risk of further losses in the fragile areas.
Consolidating before protecting
Consolidation strengthens and stabilizes weakened areas of the paint layer, reducing the risk of flaking and helping preserve the work safely. The treatment was adapted to the way the paint responded, without covering or recreating the original image.
Because the surface had no varnish layer, I applied a suitable protective coating at the end of the treatment.
Pickup and delivery across Catalonia
For this project, individual transport of the painting was included in the estimate. If you are in Catalonia, get in touch: we can arrange pickup and return delivery. If the treatment is straightforward and can be carried out safely on site, I can also work at your home.
