Happy clients. Restored artworks.
Why can restoring the same painting cost much more at one studio than another?
Two restorers may offer you very different estimates for the same painting. And the curious thing is that, at first glance, the results may look almost identical.
The difference often lies in what you cannot see.
Let me give you a real example. An old stretcher, handmade a hundred years ago, may have uneven edges that slowly rub against and cut the canvas from behind. You can clean the painting, recover its colours and repair the damaged areas. The painting will look beautiful. But if you do not fix the problem with the stretcher, the deterioration will continue, even if nobody can see it.
Do you see why two estimates can be so different?
For me, restoring a work of art is a responsibility. It is not simply about achieving an impressive “before and after”. It is about respecting the original painting, caring for its preservation and also doing the work that may never appear in a photograph.
That is why I examine the canvas, the stretcher, the paint layer and previous restorations. If I find a hidden problem, I explain it to you and propose a solution. And if an intervention is not necessary, I will not recommend it either.
My aim is to offer you the highest quality of restoration, not simply the cheapest estimate. Because I would rather do the job properly now than see you return in ten years with the same problem.
What if other restorers have already turned down your painting?
You can still contact me. At my Barcelona studio, I take on complicated cases that other restorers of old paintings prefer not to accept. For example, I have recovered paintings with old wax relinings that other studios had turned down because of their technical difficulty.
I work on the conservation and restoration of old paintings, oil paintings and works of art with tears, accumulated dirt, paint losses and structural damage. I also restore collections and prepare paintings for presentation at auction.
Send me a few photographs of your painting. We will examine it, and I will explain what it needs, what we can recover and how much it would cost.
